artist statement

I am obsessed with how bodies carve through nature. The picture: a body jumped into water, and now it floats there, as if a part of it all along. Places, as nature, offer perspectives on human nature that give(a)way for people to heal within the places that they emanate from and with the people that occupy these places. If everytime we approach the stage we harness the vitality of places then our bodies might and would fill. I am attentive to movement that fills through the distal ends of the body. The picture: spillage of limbs into the embrace of someone, in another place and in your place, and perhaps away. And, while I use the word ‘body’, I am intent on challenging the misperception of dance as moving ‘bodies’ in space for the sake of entertainment to incorporate the ‘personhood’ of dancers. I consider the ‘personhood’ of dancers as ‘flesh’ The picture: flesh decorated in tulips with the aroma of honey.

biography

Zion Martin-Hayes is a graduate of Connecticut College, with a double major in Dance and English and a minor in French. She wrote a critical honors thesis in the English department that combines her areas of study to theorize how dance functions as a method of a connection within various settings that take place in literature. Her choreographed pieces revolve around a discussion of dance as a way to reimagine the spaces in which we dance or practice together. At Connecticut College, Zion has learned from and danced under guest choreographers like Jennifer Archibald, Tania Isaac, Nathan Trice, Rashaun Mitchell + Silas Riener, Ellie Goudie-Averill, and Shakia Johnson as well as from faculty members: David Dorfman, Lisa Race, Shani Collins, Rosemarie Roberts, and Heidi Henderson. Zion also spent a summer in Sénégal dancing at Germaine Acogny’s school Ecole des Sables, and she participated in Shani Collins’s repertory piece Spring 2023 which was developed and performed in Ghana. She hopes to continue to pursue her interests in the importance of dance in building cross-cultural connections post grad at the american dance festival in north carolina.
